What to Do With a Stray Animal

When you encounter a stray dog approach cautiously. It will let you know what it thinks of the situation. Feral and stray cats will seldom come to you. They are not used to people and most have little reason to trust people. Put out food and water at the same time every day and gradually they will connect you to the source. Once they start waiting for you, set a live trap (animal cotrol will generally loan you one) to catch it. Have it spayed/neutered and release it. Continue feeding and watering. CONGRATULATIONS!! Using the Wrong Flea Treatment Can Be Harmful to Pets

A recent story from NBC warns of the dangers that can arise from improper use of "spot-on" flea treatments, such as Frontline and Advantage. Veterinarians have been prescribing these treatments for years because they're quite effective and easy to use.
Both Frontline and Advantage are applied once a month between the animal's shoulder blades. The treatment then disperses through the hair follicles and oil glands. They provide very effective flea control for one month, and are best used in conjunction with a careful program to kill the fleas in your home at the same time.
Improper use, however, can be dangerous or even deadly to pets. The EPA reported 44,000 sick pets in 2008 due to spot-on flea treatments. Six hundred of the animals died. The EPA says reactions can include vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, depression and seizures.
The EPA doesn't think these reactions were due to defective products, but rather improper use, such as using a dog product on a cat, or a product designed for a large dog on a small dog. The EPA plans to begin reviewing labels in order to determine how clear and concise the usage directions are.
One important note to keep in mind: flea and tick treatments made for dogs can contain permethrin, which can be fatal to cats. Never use a treatment designed for one species on another. And, when in doubt, consult your veterinarian. Used properly, spot-on flea treatments are quite safe, but they are still toxic. So, exercise caution, and read those labels carefully.

Kittens and Puppies With Fleas - What's the Best Way to Treat Them Safely?

Generally, most topical flea medications (Frontline, Advantage) are not recommended for use on animals under six weeks of age. However, many people are understandably reluctant to use these treatments on kittens and puppies, even if they are over six weeks.
One of the easiest ways to kill fleas on your kitten or puppy is with a simple bath, followed by combing with a flea comb. Use a small tub filled with warm water, and gently immerse your pet up to his neck. While this may be difficult with a kitten who hates water, it should be doable if the animal feels safe.
Help ensure this by holding him securely, keeping his head above water, speaking to him and petting him gently. It will also help if your pet's feet can touch bottom, so only fill the tub with enough water to ensure this is the case.
Once your pet is thoroughly wet, lift them out and wrap them in a towel. A gentle detergent, such as Dawn soap, can be applied and worked gently into a lather. Dawn is quite effective at killing fleas, and the existing fleas on your pet will probably head for his head. At this point you may be able to pick many fleas off his head by hand.
Once your pet is thoroughly lathered with dawn soap, place him back in the water and rinse him well, being careful not to get any soap or soapy water in his eyes. Then, lift him out and wrap him again in another dry towel, different than the first one you used.
Once your pet is dry and warm, comb him carefully with a flea comb. A flea comb has very small teeth that will capture remaining fleas. It's sometimes helpful to place a small amount of vaseline on the comb's teeth to help retain fleas. Starting at the animal's head, carefully comb his entire body, pausing regularly to remove fleas from the comb and place them in a cup of hot water.

Snakes: Not for everyone, snakes are great hypoallergenic pets. Some can live to 20 years or more so again, make sure you can make that sort of long-term commitment. Most snakes need special equipment to regulate temperature and humidity so bear in mind they can be expensive pets to keep.

• The lot number on the box matches the lot number on the individual applicators.
• An instruction booklet is included in the box, and includes first-aid information, emergency U.S. telephone numbers, directions for use, and instructions on how to store and dispose of the product.
• The applicator vial is child-resistant, and directions for opening are included.

Advantage:

• The applicator vials include an EPA Registration number.
• Applicator tubes include a reference to the labeling on the box for usage directions, and the manufacturers name (Bayer).
• Applicator tubes have an active ingredient statement that matches the ingredient statement on the box.

Counterfeit flea treatments can cause serious health problems for your pet. Please read the EPA warning carefully, and refer to it when purchasing flea treatments, especially Frontline and Advantage.

Dogs and cats are sensitive animals that remember and react to past experiences. Putting on your coat or the sound of keys are stimulus that tell your pet you're leaving.

Separation anxiety disorder occurs when dogs and cats that are left alone exhibit severe distress and destructive behavior.

This condition is diagnosed as part of a panic response, but it's not entirely understood why it occurs only in some pets. Also, it is a mistake to believe this behavior is "punishment" from your pet for being left alone, and this belief can give you the wrong indications about how to deal with the problem.

A Brief Look at Home Remedy For Ear Mites

When does your pet need a home remedy ear mites treatment? Well, the chances of him having an infestation needing treatment are high - if you notice things like brown ear gunk that comes back after you clean it off, and the fact that he won't stop scratching his ears.

Ear mites are nearly invisible parasites that feed off the blood of animals - namely that of cats, and small rodents, but sometimes dogs as well. It's important to know that mites are easily passed from one pet to another - and it's an ongoing cycle, as mites multiply at a fast rate, and never break their feeding cycle. Not only do they causes painful discomfort to the infected animal, but if left untreated, bacterial infections can develop and lead to permanent conditions like hearing loss.

Fortunately, there are effective treatments you can use to rid your pet of mites, that are just as good as the pricey ones you pay for at the vet's office:

Mineral or corn oils - Inexpensive mineral oil can be used to combat mites, by smothering them. Corn oil does the same thing, but also soothes the irritated ear canals and speeds up the healing process, due to certain properties in its make up. To use, place some on a few cotton balls, and get a decent amount in the canals. Clean around the whole ear area. Repeat the process every day, for a total of three days.

Olive oil - Its benefits to one's health endless, killing mites is on the list, as well - although almond oil is equally effective in this case.

To make a solution, take 400 IU of vitamin E oil and mix it with one half ounce of olive oil, and administer through a dropper. You need to be sure the solution is room temperature - and no colder - when you squeeze the dropper into the animal's ear, or he'll probably physically show you his discomfort. Clean the ear area and the canals carefully, with several clean cotton swabs. This treatment needs to be repeated every other day, for a total of 6 six days, then allow the ears to rest for three more. Upon resuming the treatment, repeat the same "every other day" protocol, this time for six weeks - as this breaks the reproduction cycle.

Mix yellow dock root extract and water - Using this combination has proven effective in vanquishing ear mites. Mix 9 drops of yellow dock root extract with a tablespoon of water. Before you insert the solution into the ear canal, make sure it's room temperature. Because home remedies must often be repeated for a while in order to kill mite eggs, repeat this procedure every other day for six or seven weeks to make sure the eggs have stopped hatching.

White vinegar swabs - Swabbing with white vinegar diffused with water, works miracles in removing dirt and debris from an animal's ears, however, keep in mind it's very acidic and could sting a pet with irritated tissues or opens sores. Don't use this treatment if your pet has these conditions in his ears, or you will probably pay the price with a sharp nail or two to the hand.

Shampoo - Shampoo your furry companion, and then make the final rinse an infusion of yellow dock tea and water. This is an effective way to rid the coat of mites that have traveled beyond the "head zone".

So even if paying a vet for treatment isn't an option for you, one of the home remedies you've just learned should be able to help. In treating your friend, keep in mind that it won't exactly be a "treat" for him, so you may want to have someone standing by to assist you when you do it.

Is Your Home Pet Proof?

We child proof our homes for children but do we pet proof our homes for pets? There could be dangers lurking in your home that could harm or even kill your pets. Do you know what they are? Have you even considered the possibility of the dangers?

Here are a few of the things I have done to pet proof my home. Keep in mind that puppies are going to require more drastic measures than the older dog. Puppies are teething and will chew to help bring their teeth in. DANGER:Electrical Cords--Make sure you do not have any electrical cords that a pet can get their mouth on. One way to find problems is to crawl around your home at your pets eye level and see what your pet can get their mouth on. DANGER:Plants--Make sure that your house plants in your home are not poisonous to pets. DANGER:Blind Cords--Make sure the cords on your blinds do not hang down. Tie them up high. I had a friend loose her dog. She jumped up at the window and her collar got caught on the cord. She hung herself while my friend was in the shower. It was so tragic.

These days our furniture can cause harm to our pets. DANGER:Your Recliner-- My sectional has four recliners in it. Always make sure your pet is not under you when you close the recliner. Watch your visitors who would not think twice about an animal being under them. DANGER:Your Bed--Our beds these days are very tall. If you have a pet that sleeps with you, make sure you have pet stairs or ramp for them to get off the bed. Jumping from the bed is NOT good for small breeds. It really jars their little bodies and could give your pet back, leg and hip problems. Broken bones could occur. This is probably not an issue with the larger dogs.

Do not forget to pet proof outside where your pet goes. DANGER:Plants--make sure that your yard plants are not poisonous to pets. I always get rid of the mushrooms that grow in my yard even if I do not see my yorkie Graycee going around them. DANGER:Pesticides--read the warnings on what ever outdoor poison you use. Some are safe for the pet after a few hours. I never let Graycee outside after my husband has sprayed. DANGER:Holes in the fence--make sure to walk the entire perimeter of the yard for any places your pet can get out. DANGER:Hidden Dangers--walk your yard and LOOK for dangers. A puppy could drown in any item that holds water. Always make sure that your pet has a fresh bowl of water outside even if your pet is an inside dog. Your pet depends on you to give them the best care that they deserve so it is up to you to do your part. Love your pets!
