Keys to Healthy Dog Food

1. Make sure you know what your dog can't or shouldn't have! This is a crucial step that takes only a few minutes of research to figure out, and one that many people skip. Many people give table scraps to their dogs that can actually make the dog quite sick, so it pays to put in a few minutes and learn as much as you can. Your dog will appreciate it, and you will have a much less lethargic pup as well.

2. Don't over-feed your dog! We all love our pets dearly, and especially when they are learning a new trick, we just can't help but give them one more treat. The problem is that obesity is just as big a problem for canines as it is for humans, perhaps even more so. Especially for larger breeds or breeds that are genetically predisposed to hip or joint problems, obesity will make their problems (or risk for problems) much higher. If you aren't sure, ask your vet if your dog is getting too heavy.

3. Know the golden ratio for dog food! The simple ratio that will work for any well balanced dog food is this: 1 part cooked protein, 1 part cooked whole grain or starch, and 1 part raw vegetable (by weight). What's great about knowing this ration is that it is extremely flexible, and allows you to use leftovers to make the food.

Just to give an example and make sure you know how to make your own dog food, here is a simple recipe:

1 pound cooked chicken
1 pound cooked brown rice
1 pound raw celery

Just combine all ingredients in a food processor until it is the consistency of wet sand. You can make enough for a week and refrigerate it, or you can make a large batch and freeze it for up to 3 months. Just pop some in the microwave whenever your pup is hungry, and you're done!
