Sit and Down Exercises For Your Dog

So you can walk your dog now without bad behavior? The next thing you should work on is to teach him to sit and stay down.

Teaching your dog to stay put is a valuable skill that can help in making your home nice and quiet. The last thing you want is the neighbors complaining about the noise your dog makes.

As you have observed in dog training, passing a treat over your dog's head causes him to sit down while chasing it. Give him the treat and you have already started teaching him how to sit. A good idea is to associate this behavior with the "sit" command so he will still comply without the treat.

An alternative would be to push his hinds down until he sits. Whichever method you choose, remember to keep teaching your dog until he gets the hang of it.

The "stay down" is by all means an extension of the "sit" command. When he has learned to sit, your next step is to encourage him to stay put.

While your dog is sitting, keep him steady and offer another treat while saying "down." At the same time, push him down gently so he knows what you want him to do.

At a more advanced stage, you can also use hand signals to teach your dog to sit and stay down.

All other obedience training exercises are based on these principles. As with any other tricks, this takes time and patience to pull off.
