We all form special bonds with those close to us, including our beloved pets. Wanting to honor our pets with a fitting memorial is a natural and healthy expression of this relationship. In the past, most veterinarians would take care of a fallen pet's remains for their clients. This may have made it easier for the pet owners in some ways, but it also left many people with no way to say goodbye. Now, most Vets simply arrange for the crematorium to return a pets ashes to the owner.
The question, then, is what to do with the ashes. While some people spread the ashes over one of their pet's favorite areas, others choose to memorialize their companion with an urn. The majority of urns for pets that are commonly available are mass produced. While some are indeed beautiful, these urns don't offer an individual way to remember your pet.
Here's my guide to making sure you get an urn you'll be happy with.
Tip One: Make sure that you get the correct size of urn for your pet. In general terms for every 1 pound of body weight before cremation you need 1 cubic inch of space in an urn. So, if you pet weighed 20 lbs. you'll need an urn of at least 20 cubic inches.
Tip Two: Get an urn that's made to last. Unless you are looking for a biodegradable urn, make sure you get one that is built well. Some quaility materials include ceramic and wood. Avoid urns made from plastic.
Tip Three: Find an Urn that you'll be happy to have in your home. Take some time to find a vessel that you will enjoy seeing day in and day out. Consider the decor of your home as well as the personality of your pet. This will make remembering your pet easier and more joyful.
Tip Four: Think twice before getting a photo urn. One of the trends out there is to purchase an urn with a slot you can put a photo of your pet in. What I've seen is that these urns tend to be of low quality. Also, many people report having difficulty at first when they are seeing a photo of their pet everyday. An alternative is to simply have your pet's name engraved on the vessel.
Purchasing an urn for your pet is a very personal choice and in my opinion the urn you end up with should reflect the uniqueness of your personal bond with your beloved companion. While some pieces are able to be personalized, you may also consider commissioning an actual custom vessel for you friend.
