The larvae begin the development of the disease and are transferred directly into the pet's skin when the mosquito bites them and feeds on their blood. As the name implies, this disease primarily affects the heart and often the lungs, even the liver. Symptoms might not appear for months after the animal's been bitten, but when symptoms finally appear, the disease is advanced. The growing worms take residence in the heart and lung arteries and that's when complications start. They will cause respiratory distress and finally heart failure.

The disease is easily preventable. Owners need to be aware of the areas they leave in and medicate their pets if they're in areas with large mosquito populations. They should give their animals Heartworm preventative drugs. The vet will check for the presence of Heartworm first, and if all's clear, he or she will give Heartworm prevention medication. If you haven't given these to your dog or cat and you leave in a mosquito prone area, there are specific symptoms that you can be on the lookout for. Every day I talk to people about their pets, the illness their pets have and the veterinary bills they have incurred. One common conception pet owners have is that veterinarians are overcharging. Before we address that question I want to go over what it takes to become a veterinarian.

First is the simple task of getting in to vet school. Most Veterinary schools in the United States have a college credit equivalent of a four year Bachelor Science degree just to apply for their school. Applicants should have a grade point average of 3.4 or above. G.R.E. scores weigh highly on application. Hours worked or volunteered in veterinary industry and total understanding of the inner workings of a hospital and veterinary medicine average over 3000. All applicants must complete an oral exam.

When all this is done there are only 28 veterinary schools in the United States. This means a large percentage of people who apply to veterinary school will be denied admittance because there is not enough space.
Now once the soon to be DVM has received his bachelor degree or equivalent and been accepted in to veterinary school now he or she will spend another four years in veterinary college. Once that is complete are Dr now must get licensed. He must pass both a national and state board examine before being allowed to practice medicine.

Once he has passed these exams he will go out in the working world and most likely take a low paying apprentice type position where he can learn from a more experienced Veterinarian.

Once our Dr is no longer an apprentice and is employed for a hospital his income will range depending on where he is. In Los Angeles Ca where I live DVM make on average anywhere from 60 to 80 dollars per hour. The staff members around him make on average 15 dollars per hour. Each veterinarian requires on average 2.5 staff members. That means just in salaries alone when working on your pet it will cost 97 to 127 dollars per hour. This does not include the cost of any medicine, drugs, suture, equipment, or must I say the O so evil Profit for the hospital. That's right the hospital needs to make a profit. Someone somewhere owns that hospital and I am sure he loves animal but he also has an family to feed just like you. How about the down time? Businesses are not always busy. When they're not busy the staff is still being paid that money has to come from somewhere otherwise the hospital would go out of business and there would be no one to treat your pet.

There is also the ever rising cost of equipment. The average x-ray machine in an animal hospital cost $50,000. Some hospitals spend double or even triple for their laboratory equipment. The Average surgery light cost $2500, Cages $5000, Surgery table $3000. Hospital expenses are higher than imaginable.

Of course there is the government as well. Local government comes up with new ways to make money every day. Hospitals receive a yearly bill for every lab machine they operate, every x-ray machine they have, for being a medical waste generator, for back flow devices on the plumbing and much more.

So the next time you're at the veterinary hospital take at look at how much time they spend on your pet. How long was your pet there? How long did the surgery take the Dr to perform from beginning to end. And think about the hourly cost just for salaries ($127 per hour) and then the cost off drugs, supplies, equipment, government, water, power, gas, etc. Maybe just maybe the bill will not seem quite so expensive.

Taking Care Of Your Hamster

Typically, animals in the rodent family are not popular house pets. That changed with the hamster, officially a member of the rodent family, an animal that has become a very popular house pet. Like any house pet, they need attention and training so they become tame and used to being around people. And just like any other pet, they need care.

Before buying a hamster, prepare a cage for its home. They do not like sunlight so place a cage in a shaded part of your home. Lay about 2 inches of pine wood shavings on the floor. Today I want to give you the basics on flea control, which is essential to keep your pet and your house parasite free.

When it comes down to it, flea treatment is fairly simple. Use a good quality flea control product (such as Frontline Plus) on your pet every month before you have a flea infestation, and it is likely that you never will get a flea problem.

On the other hand, flea treatment can be quite difficult. Use a poor quality flea control product (or none at all) and allow a big flea infestation to build up on your pet (and in your house), and we are talking about some major effort to get things sorted out.

If you are someone who has done the former, give yourself a pat on the back and stop reading. You and your pet can look forward to a long, flea free and happy life.

If, on the other hand you are knee deep in fleas, here is what you need to do:

1. Buy (and apply properly) a good quality flea control product.

Quality here is important. 2. Clean your house - thoroughly

First Flight for the 11 Pound Wonder Dog

August 2nd, 2010 was a big day for the entire family. We would be flying out of Ontario, CA and headed to Indianapolis, IN. This was our first move where the dog went with us. Taylor is an 11-pound Dorito eating dog that thinks she weighs about 75 pounds. Our kids were flying experts but we had to take some extra precautions for Taylor.

We went out and got her one of those expensive airline carriers. They cost enough that you wonder if the airline gets a cut. Then we went to the vet to get some pills to safely get her some rest on the flights. When we got to the flying day, the first thing I did was break up the pills in some milk. She was appreciative of the milk and did not notice the extra flavor. I was sure that the pills would get Taylor at least 8 hours of rest. Of course, with an airport comes curiosity.

The pills that were supposed to put her asleep for 8 hours made her groggy for two hours and ornery for 6. On our first flight, she was still groggy. We went through the TSA checkpoint and she tried to give security a lick in the face. That brought a smile to their faces and got us through quickly. Her pre-flight and first flight were fairly uneventful. She was a little scared but we talked to her throughout the flight.

There are two types of retrieves. One is the "Natural" retrieve. These are dogs that are bred for retrieving, and do it without much, if any, formal training. When I was growing up in a small town in mid-western Canada, there was a black Lab that would come up to you and drop a stick that he had been carrying in his mouth, in front of you. If you picked up the stick and threw it, the Lab would chase after it, pick it up and bring it back to you, waiting for you to throw it again. He would keep retrieving until you got tired of throwing the stick.

The other type is a "Trained" retrieve. If done correctly, almost any dog can be taught to retrieve on command. Depending on the technique, diligence and persistence of the trainer and the personality and breed of the dog, it can take as little as ten minutes to get the dog to understand the basics of retrieving, or as long as a month. It's a lot easier and faster if the dog already knows that the trainer is the boss or the Alpha dog and has already had some basic obedience training. He should know the commands "sit" and "come".

The first step is to get your dog to hold something in his mouth. When I trained my dogs, I used a wooden dumbbell because I was training for AKC obedience trials, and that's what they required. But you can use anything that is easy for your dog to hold in his mouth and is large enough that you can easily take it out of his mouth. A leather glove is ideal, or a ball or a dog toy will work. Keep a leash on your dog unless he has been trained to sit and come reliably on command while off lead.

Step 1. Give your dog the command "take it", "get it", "fetch" or any other word you would like to use but make sure it is no longer than two syllables and always use the same word. If your dog will not take the article in his mouth, you can open his mouth by putting your hand under his jaw with your thumb near the rear of his mouth on one side and your fingers near the rear of his mouth on the other side, and gently squeeze. When your dog opens his mouth, put the article in it and let him close his mouth, or you close it and hold it closed with your had around his muzzle. Give your dog lots of praise when he accepts the article in his mouth.

Step 2. After your dog holds the article in his mouth for ten to fifteen seconds, give him the command "give", "let go" or any other word you want to use, and take the article from your dog. If he doesn't give it to you freely, open his mouth like you did before, and take the article out. When he releases the article, give him lots of praise.

Step 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 letting your dog hold the article for longer and longer times until your dog will readily take the article from you, hold it in his mouth until you ask for it, and readily give it back to you.

Step 4. Once you have completed step 3, start holding the article closer and closer to the ground (or floor if you're inside) until your dog will pick the article up from the ground (or floor).

Step 5. Once step 4 is completed, toss the article about a foot or two in front of your dog and give him the command to get it. If he doesn't go for the article, using your leash, walk him to it and give him the command again if you have to. Then, when he has the article in his mouth, walk backwards to where you started, guiding him around so that he is directly in front of you. Tell him to sit. Then give him the command "give". Take the article out of his mouth. If he doesn't give it to you freely, open his mouth and take it out. As soon as you get the article out of his mouth, even if you had to forcibly open his mouth to get it, give him lots of praise. You want him to know that he gets rewarded for giving up the article. Keep repeating step 5 until your dog goes out to the article, picks it up and brings it back to you, sits and lets you taker the article out of his mouth on command.

Step 6. When step 5 goes without a hitch, you can start tossing the article further and further away, but only a foot or two further at a time. If your dog always comes to you on command, you can take the leash of and toss the article further out than the length of the leash. If your dog has to be on a leash, you can get a 25 foot training leash or even just a long piece of light rope. This way you can throw the article 10 to 20 feet away and have control of your dog in the event that he doesn't want to return to you. You can also work your dog in an enclosed space such as a large room or a fenced yard. Even after your dog retrieves just the way you want him to, you must praise him after each retrieval.

Ok Ok... I admit it! After years of using words like; 'DISGUSTING!' 'UNHYGENIC!' and 'WRONG' to describe pet owners who allow their pets to sleep in their bed, I plead guilty to the same offense. The thing is, my pre-pet owner perception that these adorable little creatures (or big in others cases) should under no circumstance be allowed to even sleep in ones room never lone their bed, has change a tad. I have a queen size bed to myself (well not really so it seems) in which I occupy about 20 percent of the right side. To my left, tucked deep into the warmth of my bed cover and spooned to my left side like she is about to fall of the bed (when in actual fact she has 80 percent of it), is my gorgeous niece Bella. Bella is a 4 year old Maltese/Shitzu. I'm not done yet, as lying sprawled out on my chest with his arms clinging around my neck like he is holding on for dear life is my cuddly 9 month nephew rag doll cat.

The thing is, I know that in allowing this, I'm allowing my furry family members to carry all sorts of dirt and germs into my bed, not to mention acquiring a lifelong problem of pets with hierarchy misconceptions. Do not be mistaken about this: it is not a problem of a dirty home or pet, nor is it only for outdoor pets. It is simply a problem that one flea gets in the home, lays eggs and the cycle has begun. Once you've begun the process of breaking the vicious cycle, maintaining a flea-free environment is very important.

It may be helpful for you to understand a little bit about fleas and their life cycle to better grasp not only how difficult it can be to get rid of them, but also how important it is to continue preventative measures after they are finally gone. Fleas go from eggs to larva, then to pupa and finally to adult. You don't need to know that or than to understand that when you see an adult, more than likely there are plenty of other fleas (in various stages) lurking about as well. The other flea stages are nearly impossible to see as they are tiny and white. They can easily be mistaken for dander, on a dark pet, or be totally missed on the fibers of a light colored pet bed. The point here is that the fleas are lurking and will continue to be around for weeks to months, as the fleas mature from their current life phase.

If you don't know whether or not your pet has fleas, here is one little trick to check (but, by no means does this mean that there are absolutely no fleas around):

Take a fine-toothed comb (or purchase a flea comb from the pet store) and comb the fur on the back of your pet, near the base of their tail.
If you see fine dark specks, that look much like dirt, place it on a damp paper towel.
Either allow the 'dirt' to sit for a few minutes or using your fingertip, gently rub the 'dirt' into the paper towel.
If you see a light orange color leech from the dirt on to the damp paper towel-that is "flea dirt" or digested blood (you can think of it as flea poop).
If you do not see any discoloring on the paper towel, more than likely your pet has not had recent exposure to fleas. The "flea dirt" comes from when the flea bites in to the skin of your pet, sucks in some blood and then makes deposits on your pet after they've digested what they needed.

No matter how you come to find evidence of fleas on your pets, the key is to start treating your pets immediately. There are many ways to treat for fleas including topicals, shampoos, sprays, oral medications, etc. You should consult your veterinarian for their recommended flea treatments.

A few points of caution:

Not all topicals are safe for pets.
Dips are not required to treat for fleas anymore, as they can be very harmful to pets (with the advancement in flea treatments, flea dips are becoming a thing of the past)
Be sure you read all labels carefully before giving your pet any flea treatment, before spraying or "bombing" and if you or your pet, have health issues.
If using a topical flea treatment, read the package directions and plan grooming/bathing around that information. Over-bathing may wash away topical treatments.
Consult your veterinarian for the safest, most effective treatment for your pet and home.
It is not recommended to buy products outside of the United States (if you live in the United States).
Again, your pet may have fleas that have not matured to the biting, adult stage. If you have a concern, give your pet a bath in pet-appropriate shampoo, rinse well and dry. This should wash away any fleas presently on your pet. After drying, according to package instructions, apply your topical flea preventative. Understand that fleas can remain in the pupa (cocoon) stage for as long as a year, making flea preventative a necessity year round.

The same day that you treat your pet, you should treat the environment. Fleas thrive in warm moist places, making even your home in the winter a thriving environment for fleas. You should wash all bedding that your pet(s) are in contact with on a regular basis. Be sure to clean carpets, wipe down flooring and heat sources (like baseboard heating). If the job is too big for you, you have many pets and/or your flea problem is still present after months of treatments, you should call an exterminator. Try to find a local exterminator that guarantees their work, and that is willing to give you an estimate based on your home's square footage. An exterminator experienced with flea control is ideal. Your ultimate goal here is to get rid of the fleas as quickly and safely as possible.

The danger is that these parasites can be passed on to their owners in a variety of ways. How many children play in sandpits where dogs or cats have left their calling card? Or how many people are repeatedly licked on the face by a friendly pet? How many people don't scrub their fingernails before eating?

How can a parasite possibly live inside your body? The answer is simple. The purpose of a parasite is to not make itself known. Parasites are very adept at evading a response from the immune system. They live undetected because once they are revealed, something will be done to eliminate them. Parasites have an innate ability to survive and reproduce. This is the purpose of any organism on this planet. Although this may sound simplistic it can make life for humans very difficult.

If you know how to recognize and interpret the symptoms, the presence of a parasite can be established easily. In humans this can manifest as low energy levels, health conditions, skin rashes, pains, frequent colds, flu and constipation. The list goes on and on. The key is to question these symptoms rather than think such afflictions are commonplace.

In his book, "Animals Parasitic in Man." by Geoffrey Lapage, states: "There is no part of the human body, nor indeed, any part of the bodies of the hosts of parasitic animals in general, which is not visited by some kind of parasitic animal at some time or another, during their life histories." In short parasites can migrate to any part of your body. No organ is immune from their infestation.

Parasites that regularly affect animals include microscopic protozoans, a host of migratory worms and arthropod parasites such as mites, ticks, lice, fleas and even some spiders.

When I was a child, my parents presented me with a big box on Christmas morning. I opened it. It was empty. The contents, a rescue puppy, had escaped somehow prior to the gifts grand entrance.

Over the next month, I grew very fond of the small puppy, and I found its occasional hiccuping to be odd and quirky. Then, one day, the puppy disappeared.

Years later, I was told that the puppy had distemper. My mother repeated several times over the ensuing years that she should have known to take the puppy to the vet, but she had never heard of distemper. It affected me. It obviously affected my Mother.

T'is the season for giving presents, and many people may be considering giving a pet. Puppies and kittens are unbelievably adorable. I know. That's why I love to photograph them. That's why I have been parent to a few. Their playfulness is beyond cute, and they do so many things making people sigh, "Awww!"

Unfortunately, that image is all too often the only image that the potential gift giver sees in their minds eye as they consider giving a puppy or kitten to a child who can't even remember to brush their teeth! A gift to any person of any age is about commitment.

So, here is a reality check from a pet professional:

Puppies poop and chew, kittens sharpen their claws... things to consider before giving "the gift that keeps on living"... Kittens and puppies are living, breathing, and most importantly growing things. They grow bigger (and bigger and in some cases still bigger) and they get older.

Think about this:
- The average indoor cat lives 15-20+ years. Mine lived 19.
- Large breed dogs live 8+ years
- Smaller breeds dogs live 15+ years.

So, a six or seven year old child may be headed off to college and their parents will be left to care for a geriatric pet, with all the health issues and expense that goes along with ever increasing age. The tender care and feeding of a new furry addition is a family effort.

For adult humans, lifestyle can be an issue. In our cat-controlled-household, were we to get a dog, we could have issues. I would want a lap dog, my husband would like a dog with which he could jog. The image of my husband dragging a Chihuahua or Doxie behind him is almost as funny as a Retriever sitting on my lap. We travel, so bigger dogs present more challenges and less options for pet sitters. Neither of us is allergic, but many people are, so gifting a pet could become a really bad human health concern. Before you can find a durable, watertight container for your pet's first aid kit, you need to know what to keep inside of it so that you know what size of container you need. With this in mind, here are some of the things that you are going to want to make sure to place inside of your pet first aid kit include:

- The phone number for your veterinarian

- Sterile gauze pads (act as Band-Aids)
- Gauze bandage rolls (for muzzling)
- Flour, baking powder or corn starch (to stop toenails from bleeding)

Ferrets are quite amusing mammals when it comes to food and diet. (and believe me!) If you ask five separate parents you will receive five very different answers on how to fuel your ferret. The most crucial part is just reacting, if your baby is constantly getting ill from a particular diet, obviously it's time to change.

Ferrets are by definition obligate carnivores, with the key word being "carnivore", this means that their diet should be primarily composed of meat. Along with the fact that ferrets don't digest plant matter well anyway, they thrive on

high protein (30 - 50%) (and must come from meat products, not plants)
high fat (20 - 30%)
low fiber
and low carbohydrate diets.>
They have a quick metabolism which keeps them very healthy and slender. Because of this, they eat very often ( every 3-5 hours) which means that as an owner you should always have proper foods ready and stocked up.

In the past you had to feed your ferret a cat, or mink diet along with some raw meats and other items. While this wasn't miserable, it was wasn't perfect and led companies to start making ferret food exclusively. You can pick up ferret food at any pet shop or even some internet websites.

A common theme that i have noticed in my own personal experience is that fish is a bad idea. While some similar animals (cats, minks, fox's) can thrive on fish, ferrets don't seem to digest it quite the same and it can lead to malnutrition. Try and stick to other raw meats like chicken, turkey, and some beef.

Just as a final few notes, make sure to always have an abundance of fresh water readily available for your ferret. Treats should be given very sparingly to make sure you pet is healthy, and make sure if you give a protein based snack, it should be from a meat product.

But did you know that human's aren't the only ones suffering from increased stress. Animals feel the stress too. This is all well and good, but before you bring him home, you need to make sure your house is puppy proof. This will not only ensure that little Jaco keeps himself safe, but that you also keep your possessions looking pristine.

There's a lot to do, so be sure to start a few days or more before you plan to bring the puppy into your pad. Below is a list of common things to be on the lookout for both inside and outside your home. This list isn't exhaustive, so your own judgment will come in handy too.

Indoor Hazards:

• Tape all electrical cords out of reach of puppy teeth, or cover them in protective piping. If not kept away from him, Jaco could chew through them and burn his mouth, or worse, electrocute himself.

Most of us can agree, and Groucho would approve, that outside a dog, a book is man's best friend; but instead of feeding your brain, here, we talk about feeding your favorite pet, Milo. The topic on what to feed your furry four-legged pal has been a hot topic for quite some time. While cats are obligate carnivores, the diet of a dog can be varied as need calls for it, or if an owner objects to a certain dietary regimen because they themselves do not eat meat or animal byproducts. That said, there are things you do, and things you do not feed your dog. Chocolate is one of those things. But this article focuses less on the out and out bad things that you should never feed your dog, and instead we look at a particular source of food - meat. We also discuss ways you can augment your dog's diet if you do choose to feed him meat instead of prepared food.

Milo does well with dry food, right? But of course not just any dry food will do. Most pet foods, regardless their form, are over-processed. Laced with preservatives and additives that make them taste delicious, they really do not do your furry friend any favors. This is why some people advocate giving their dogs raw meat. After all, if it works for wild canids, why not Milo? Well, therein lies the problem. You see, wild animals may subsist on uncooked meat and generationally, there is only a thin veil between Milo and his wild ancestors. The key difference is of course that what animals eat in the wild hasn't been sent through a slaughter house and packaged for the stores. What they offer for humans is processed too, and of course it comes laden with all manner of bacteria that is harmful to both you and him.

If You are Going to Have Milo Go Raw, Please Don't Jump in Feet First
Raw meat 'can' be ingested, but if you opt to do so and Milo is unaccustomed to this, you should start out slowly. Applying the same method of switching from one dry food to another, feed Milo 75% of his normal diet and 25% of the new raw diet and see how it goes. If he tolerates, after a week of this move to 50/50 and from there, titrate him off the kibble. While it is a somewhat viable option, you can never forget protein. Milo can get this from either cheese, (cooked) fish or eggs, or even cottage cheese, which additionally has fat that he might need. Just because he can eat it doesn't mean he should. It goes for us, and to an extent, Milo is just as susceptable to nasties that can lay us low. This is why you should always cook foods like eggs and meat to kill off bacteria and toxins that could ruin his day (and yours).

Really though, it is the opinion of this author that the risks simply are not worth Milo's health. Perhaps this may be a viable option if you are raising your own cows. Alternatively, you can feed meat to your dog, but unless you plan to go to the time and expense of feeding him organic meat (meaning that the cows are free roaming and are not in close quarters, which breeds infections that jump from animal to animal) and as a result are not pumped with myriad hormones and antibiotics, cook it first. And get rid of the bones. Bones, especially those of chicken, can splinter and do grievous damage to his intestines. My dog gets a nice diet of cooked chicken and rice and she loves it. On occasion I give her spaghetti and meatballs, sans onions and garlic of course. So if you want to try an alternative to overpriced, overprocessed foods, you can certainly find one. It just takes a little effort. Research, foresight, and not jumping on a dogfood bandwagon because it is what the Internet said you should do will go a long way to easing the process of altering his diet. Big business and the occasional unscrupulous or misinformed vet might tell you to take up raw meat as a supplement to Milo's existing regimen. Doing your homework now and making sure you are well prepared for the foray into new forms of chow will save you and Milo tons of grief later on down the road.

The evil puppy brought on dozens of complications and one of them has been exactly how for getting us both out from the car at the same time without anyone busting a leg. A plan and a little training should make this event rather easy to deal with.

Before you take multiple dogs in your vehicle along with you, put together a master plan about the best way to get us both out of the vehicle. At any time you do not have a plan we definitely will each bounce out just as soon as the car door is open. This can be cause bedlam. We all know that I should certainly get to go out first, but the evil brand new puppy dog does not seem to have an understanding of that. The actual main problem is that getting to cruise in the car is usually more thrilling than just about anything else, however getting out of your car is somehow 10 times greater. I used to be anxious that the evil new dog was going to jump on me. Today it seems to be fairly non eventful. Getting two dogs is a great thing but usually there are things that could cause issues. So if we were to exclude those animals in their prime, and focus on those who have a weakened immune system, or are simply getting up there in age, the number probably would be closer to one out of every two.

But in all three cases, as the bacterial infection started to set in, they became less and less excited about going out. And when they did muster up the energy to go out they wanted to come back in after only a few minutes.

The second thing that I noticed was that they weren't quite able to empty their bladders, causing their backsides to be damp with urine; not soaked just damp.

The third thing was a change in social behavior. For example they always stayed close when our family was watching television. All of the sudden they were MIA.

The fourth thing was a substantial increase in the amount of water consumed. In fact, some days the water bowl would be empty in the mornings. Surprisingly, excess water consumption is part of an animal's natural defense mechanism against bacterial infection.

If you will look for these four behavioral changes there will be a good chance you will be able to recognize that something is wrong, and use these early detection clues to make some early changes.
